Berlin, 10. May 2012, SOLON Energy GmbH is building a 1.6 MW photovoltaic system on five roofs of the Berliner Großmarkt wholesale market. For this order by the Berliner Energieagentur (Energy Agency), SOLON is using the three systems SOLON SOLfixx, SOLON SOLbond Seam and SOLON SOlbond Rail. The power plant covering the same surface area as six soccer fields (39,000 m²) is Berlin‘s largest roof-mounted PV system and feeds electricity for roughly 500 households into the public grid, reducing CO2 emissions by 851 tons each year.
The roofs of the Berliner Großmarkt (BGM) feature a variety of designs. “We have the right solution for any kind of roof,” says Stefan Säuberlich, CEO of SOLON. “In all three systems which we use here, low weight and protection of the roof are a priority.”
Berliner Energieagentur (BEA) is the company which will operate the photovoltaic system. With an investment volume of almost € 2.3 million, it is intended as a model project for Berlin as a location for solar energy.
Michael Geißler, Managing Director of BEA: “This project shows that operator models can still be successful, in spite of considerably more difficult conditions for photovoltaics. Even for large inner-city systems and when working with German manufacturers.”
SOLON SOLfixx is used on the plastic roofs at BGM. The trough-shaped substructure is spot-glued to the foil, and the modules are then clicked into place. This plug & play system is simple to install and can be installed without piercing the roof. It weighs 12.9 kg/m². The modules are ideally aligned to the sun with a pitch of 10°.
SOLON designed the SOLbond PV system specifically for metal roofs. SOLbond Seam is used on the standing seam roofs of the wholesale market. The powerful frameless modules are attached to the rail systems, which do not penetrate through the roof, via innovative adhesive technology. This mounting process is also quick and easy. The weight is 11 kg/m².
SOLON installs the SOLbond Rail on trapezoidal sheet roofs. The system is installed by attaching a fibreglass-reinforced plastic rail directly to the roof and then gluing the frameless modules to it. The system weight is 11 kg/m².
